So what music do a String Quartet provide for a wedding or partnership ceremony?

Generally couples ask us to play for approximately 20-30 minutes before the ceremony as guests arrive. Having live classical music played can create a real sense of occasion as friends and family are seated and always adds a touch of elegance to the proceedings.

Just before the service is about to begin, we will take our cue from the minister or registrar and play for the entrance of the bride. This can be something very traditional such as the Wedding March, Pachelbels Canon or the Bridal Chorus - or could be a piece of music which is meaningful to the couple getting married.

As the service continues, a string quartet may well accompany hymns in the absence of an organ,

or play a couple of pieces during the signing of the register whilst guests take photographs. There is also the possibility of featuring the quartet as part of the service (rather like having a reading or poem) and asking us to play a favourite song which is special to the bridal couple.

At the end of the service, we will provide music for the exit of the newly married couple - and continue playing as the assembled guests disperse to the gardens or reception rooms.

During the drinks reception, photographs or receiving line, we are usually asked to move to a prominent area where guests are mingling and play more upbeat, celebratory music and create both the perfect atmosphere and a talking point. Couples frequently ask us to stay on and provide music during the wedding breakfast, usually finishing just before the speeches are due to start.
